These drawings in compressed charcoal and wax explore the process of the rhythmic application of marks made deliberately. From what were probably the first marks made by man, the day count of prisoners, through Roman numerals to bar-codes and the binary system, the vertical notch has long carried an inherent value. As a unit it possesses infinite variations on the significance of that value.
